More Volunteers at Cooper Street Recreation Center

Lou & Darrel Swanfeld

February, 2010

This month we are again focusing on Volunteers at Cooper Street Recreation Center.

Lou & Darrel Swanfeld have been volunteering at Cooper Street for three years working mostly in the “rug rat” room.  These children are in kindergarten or first grade. They consider themselves “study partners” with the students and help them with any homework- mainly reading.  After their homework and required readings are completed, they may work on computer games or have a treat. One girl wanted to adopt Darrel as her father which flattered Darrel because she didn’t say “Grandfather”!  The Swanfelds are very active in PGICA’s Couples Bridge & Seafarers.

Marsha Sparks

Marsha Sparks brings a unique touch to her volunteering at Cooper Street.  For three years she has  brought her guitar to enhance learning.  Before the elementary children settle down to concentrate on homework, she strums “Shake the Willies Out”  This song lets the students release some energy and be silly for short time, and they can settle down and complete any homework.  Marsha works with the students to be disciplined, mannerly, and be respectful to adults and others. If students get rowdy or noisy,  she starts a rhyme with an added clap that students have to repeat.  This helps students settle down again and helps with volume control so students can go back to their work. Other guitar songs such as “Happy Birthday” in other languages and a musical grace before eating help students learn in a loving, controlled atmosphere.

Some students have a tough time and choosing the right road is difficult for them.  With diligent kindness and music, Marsha builds an atmosphere which develops good attitudes in students. Marsha also brings her music to the elderly and belongs to a musical group.
