Anne Small

April, 2010

Anne Small is a PGI snowbird who spends summers in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. She lives with her husband, Denny on 145 acres by the Potomac River about an hour outside of Washington, D. C.

Dr. Doolittle has a big competitor in Anne.  She not only talks to the animals, she has done animal welfare work for over forty years. She was President of the Animal Welfare League. With a West Virginia friend, Anne co-founded a spay and neuter assistance program to assist those that cannot pay for their pet’s neutering.  This program has grown to seventeen participating vets. They also help with rabies and other pet shots for those who qualify. Anne helped establish the Briggs Animal Adoption Center in Charles Town, West Virginia. In this facility, there is a huge cattery which is one huge room with cat walks, trees, small rooms with cat beds and tunnels leading to an enclosed porch. About one hundred cats can be housed at a time.  Anne spearheaded many fundraisers with auctions and dinners raising $30-60,000 at a time.

Anne does not slow down during  her time in PGI. She is very active in our local animal welfare programs raising money, but she also gets involved with the animals by volunteering at Octagon cutting vegetables and feeding animals.

Anne has adopted many animals, sometimes having six or more animals (mostly cats) at one time. Currently, she has two rescued cats Rosie and Muffy. Muffy has one foot with seven toes and three feet with six toes.  Muffy of course thinks that’s normal. Rescuing animals is just a slice of Anne’s animal passion. Her main emphasis for animal welfare is educating owners and spaying all adoptees.
