The person responsible for staffing all the friendly and helpful people at the front desk is Thelma Lindberg. She staffs the front desk from 8:30 am to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday all year long. (That’s a lot of hours). In addition, she trains desk volunteers to assist members and visitors with the many offerings at PGICA. Thelma tells her volunteers that they are the friendly face that visitors and members first see and the pleasant voice on the phone. Answering the phone, answering questions, signing up members for activities, and recording the many loaner items are just a few of the volunteers duties that make PGICA run smoothly and help with Beth Magnin’s job burden. Thelma logs volunteers’ hours monthly and publishes the names in the Commentator monthly.
These volunteers are honored at an April luncheon. Thelma grew up in Massachusetts and lived in Falmouth, near Cape Cod, she always lived close to the water so Punta Gorda was a great match for her move to Florida in 2002. Thelma and her family boated from island to island around Cape Cod which led her to join the Coast Guard Auxiliary and is a past Flotilla Commander. In Massachusetts she had a dressmaking and bridal business, prior to that she taught kindergarten. During all this, Thelma raised 2 daughters and 3 sons. Her hobby now is quilting, and she belongs to the Peace River Quilting Guild.
Thelma’s creed is to be a “life long volunteer”. She has been a front desk volunteer for years and has spent two years as the front desk volunteer coordinator. She always needs volunteers for the front desk. Her training is very easy to follow with step by step written directions and special front desk volunteers’ training session throughout the year. It is an easy and delightful job. Thelma’s pleasant personality makes you feel like family. During the summer, many of the desk volunteers fly north so Thelma really needs summer volunteers.
