Members You Need to Meet
Doris Dallain
October, 2010
Our Gifted Gator Boutique has constantly improved over the years. Many people…artists, craftsman, knitters, and authors…have worked together to produce a super gift shop.
Doris Dallain is one of the many who guided our artists and organizers to improve the quality of the Gifted Gator. In the old and new building, she worked to renovate the shop. This started when Doris joined the Newcomers. Penny Shattuck encouraged everyone to volunteer at the PGICA. Doris signed up for the gift shop.
She later organized a book club and became an original member of the Seafarers. She blossomed into roses from there. Laura Lambert and Doris managed your gift shop a year before hurricane Charley in our old building. For a year after Charley, they made plans for the Gifted Gator and continue to volunteer in the gift shop today.
Volunteering and working with other members of PGICA convinced Doris this was a special place to retire. Before doing so, she wasn’t sure she and husband, Jerry, had made the right decision on where to retire. They had looked at many places before Jerry said they had better buy now, so they settled here in July of 2001. Since that time, Doris has taken PGICA classes to learn MahJongg, bridge and art.
Doris worked in the communication industry all her life, starting as a summer student when only sixteen. She worked for Southern Bell Corporation and loved working in Connecticut and Texas. In Texas, she volunteered as a docent at the San Antonio Zoo. This is where Doris got hooked on volunteering!
She retired as Marketing Director for long distance service in November, 2001 when offered a buy-out she could not refuse.
Born in Quebec City, Canada, Doris graduated with a B.S. and M.B.A. from the University of Montreal. She speaks fluent French.
At the PGICA Volunteer’s Luncheon in April, Doris spoke on the importance of volunteering. In May she started a Knitting Club which meets every Wednesday morning in room 4 from 9 a.m. to noon. Loyal followers met all summer without her as Doris summers in Vermont.
Doris’ husband Jerry is a busy retiree (almost). He worked in the foundry business and still does consulting, travelling to China regularly to do so. Doris and Jerry met in Mexico in 1979 and married in 1981. Jerry’s passion and hobby are vehicles. He has owned two ultra lights and built a 1965 Shelby Cobra from a kit.
Could you be the next Doris Dallain? The PGICA is always seeking volunteers. Register at the office where a list is kept of volunteers for various projects.
